How WPM is calculated
A “word” in typing tests is defined as 5 characters (including spaces). This standard unit allows fair comparison regardless of word length.
Gross WPM
(characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Net WPM (shown in results)
Gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes)
Accuracy
Percentage of characters typed correctly compared to the challenge text.
correct chars ÷ total typed × 100

Tips to improve
- • Keep fingers on the home row (ASDF / JKL;)
- • Prioritise accuracy first — speed follows
- • Use all fingers, not just index fingers
- • Look at the screen, not your keyboard
- • Practice 10–15 minutes daily for steady gains
