QR codes store data as a grid of black and white modules. Three finder patterns in the corners let scanners locate and orient the code. Reed-Solomon error correction means codes remain readable even if part of the image is damaged.
Higher error correction (Q or H) makes the QR more resilient — useful if you plan to add a logo or print it on uneven surfaces — at the cost of denser modules.
